Design Manager Job Description:
Overview of Tulalens: Tulalens is a startup social enterprise headquartered in San Francisco, CA with operations in Chennai, India. We envision a world in which under-served communities are knowledgeable consumers equipped with choices.
In India, 55% of all women and 70% of pregnant women have iron deficiency anemia. This leads to cognitive impairments and reduced productivity. In pregnant women, this leads to miscarriages, 20% of all maternal deaths, and iron-deficiency and stunting in infants. Tulalens is working to identify an appropriate solution to this problem for women living in slum areas by applying the principles of lean startup and human-centered design.
Summary of Role: The Design Manager will use principles of human-centered design and lean startup to help us continuously improve upon the service we provide women and to expand our work across several slum areas. You will work closely with Priya and Saumya, Tulalens co-founders, and report directly to Priya.
This is a full-time paid position. Salary is competitive with other startup social enterprises. The initial contract will be from April 2016 to June 2016. Upon mutual agreement, the contract will be extended.
Responsibilities:
The Design Manager’s primary role will be to:
- Ensure that the feedback loop between customers and co-founders remains strong and quick
- Work closely with co-founders both in-person and over the phone
- Work with our implementing team in India to test and refine different aspects of our service
- Recommend refinements based on learnings
- Be extremely meticulous about the quality of data and observations collected
Skills and Background:
- You’re fluent in both English and Tamil. Bonus: You’re also fluent in Hindi.
- You’re passionate about applying design thinking and/or lean startup principles to refine products and/or services used by under-served communities. Bonus: You’ve actually done this before.
You’ve worked to improve the health of people living in slum areas previously. Bonus: You have some knowledge of nutrition.
- You’re comfortable interacting in-person with women who live in slum areas.
- You’re self-motivated and can work well in unstructured environments.
- You’re phenomenal at listening, observing and communicating findings.
